Writing with Color and Rhyme

I was sleeping in the RED barn
when a slithery snake came in
I heard it in the hay so I threw my YELLOW yarn
he climbed up on the RED bin
I ran quickly out into the GREEN yard
when I saw its BLACK skin.

It followed me out
when I saw the YELLOW stripe
I was going to pout
then I saw a RED stripe
There were so many colored bands I had to count
Then it left me and I looked up what was its type

(it was a coral snake by the way)

My Favorite Place

My

favorite

place is a

mountain. It

is very beautiful.

You can ski, hike and

snowshoe. It has a very

nice view. It is fun to hike

and gorgeous when you get to

the top. All mountains are different.

Some are tall, some are short, some are

spiky and some are flat, some are rough and

some are smooth. A mountain is my favorite place.

My First Limerick

My Silly Sister
This morning my sister drew on the wall
Then she bounced on her bouncy ball
She talks so much
I can't walk with my lunch
She is growing so very tall
She has an imaginary friend named Larry Boy
And together they play with their favorite toy
She creates a mob
When she has the tomato Bob
She drinks her milk which is soy
She likes to send pretend mail
to another invisible friend Mr. Tail
everyone can hear her talk
she will talk all through your walk
talk talk talk all down the trail

MyFav0rite S0ngs

* due t0 s0me water spilling 0n the keyb0ard last night, the letter 0 d0es n0t w0rk, s0 we have t0 type the number zer0 in its place. That is why the typing l00ks funny.

__________________________________________________________________

I have three fav0rite s0ngs. These s0ngs are Mr. M0m, As the Days G0 By, and The Day The Music Died.

My first fav0rite s0ng is Mr. M0m. This is a st0ry s0ng. It tells abut a dad that stays h0me and watches the kids. He thinks it was g0ing t0 be easy, but it turned 0ut it was very hard. My fav0rite part is the ch0rus that talks ab0ut gum in the baby's hair, the dryer burning, f00d spilled 0n the furniture and watching Barney 0ver and 0ver. L0neStar sings this great s0ng.

My next fav0rite s0ng is As The Days G0 By. This is a s0ng that tells y0u what t0 d0. It basically tells y0u n0t t0 let y0ur life fly by, but t0 make the m0st 0f it. It is a very fast s0ng sung by Keith Urban.

My third fav0rite is The Day The Music Died. Since it is an 0lder s0ng, my m0m helped me l00k it up earlier t0 find 0ut m0re ab0ut it. I learned that it was written in the late 60's ab0ut a singer named Buddy H0lley wh0 was killed in a plane crash. It was written ten years after H0lley's death by a s0ngwriter named Dan McLean. I like this s0ng because the temp0 changes a l0t and because it is very singable. It has been a very challenging s0ng t0 learn.

My fav0rite type 0f music is c0untry music. I get that fr0m my m0ther. My parents decided that m0st 0f the s0ngs 0n the radi0 stati0n were n0t appropriate, s0 my dad made me my 0wn CD 0f 18 s0ngs that I like and the lyrics are clean and fun. These three are my fav0rite.

Arches over the blue sky
It is colorful

LIGHTNING

Persuasive Paragraph - Why kids should get an allowance

I think every kid should have allowance and I have three reasons why. These reasons are to buy things, to go someplace and to save.
The first reason why kids needs an allowance is to buy things. Kids can save up and go buy something they really want. A good way to start is if your child wants something and you do not want to give it to him or just give him money, then start an allowance. Make him do chores around the house and if he does all of them then give him some money.
The next reason is to go someplace fun. If your kid wants to go to an amusement park or the movies or somewhere like that, then he should have allowance money to buy a ticket.
My last reason is to have an allowance to save the money. Kids can save for big things like college or a car.
In conclusion, I think all kids should have an allowance.

My three favorite things to do

I have three favorite things I enjoy doing. They are playing with my friends, playing War, and reading books.

The first one is playing with my friends. This is something I usually do everyday. We do all kinds of things like board games, computer, riding bikes, playing basketball, football in the green belt, tag, and legos. Doing these things with friends make them even more fun.

My second favorite activity is playing War. Not the card game war, but real war. Me and my friends divide into two teams in the neighborhood and play war against each other with imaginary weapons. It is something we like to do a lot. It is a lot of fun, but sometimes it can get really hectic.

My third favorite thing to do is reading. I read a lot! So far this school year I have read over 45 books. My favorite series is the Hardy Boy series, but I also read biographies, classic books, Newberry books, animal magazines, historical books, and books of the Bible. I read in bed every night for hours. Most nights my mom has to tell me to turn out my light at 11:00. I take books with me wherever I go.

These are the things that I enjoy doing a lot. What are yours?

LIFE ON THE OREGON TRAIL
a narrative story by Collin Smith
The Smith family was leaving to go to Washington State on the Oregon Trail in ten minutes. Collin (their ten year old boy) was running in the yard with their golden retriever, Steve. Kaitlynn (the eight year old daughter) was helping their mom pack up the wagon.
"Collin," mom yelled, "We are leaving in three minutes!"
"OK Mom," yelled Collin. "Come on Steve, let's go."
"Come on Dad," called Kaitlynn.
Dad said, "OK , I am coming. Come on kids, we are leaving."
TWO DAYS LATER
"This road is really bumpy," said Collin. Steve barked too.
"Yeah, I know," said Kaitlynn, "Can we stop here?"
"No, we have to reach the river by nightfall," said Dad.
"Ok," said Collin.
Kaitlynn said, "I am tired, I am going to take a nap in the back on the wagon."
"Good night," said Mom.
TWO HOURS LATER
"YAWN!" said Kaitlynn. "Where are we?"
"By the river," said Mom.
"Where is Collin?" asked Kaitlynn.
"He and Steve are swimming in the river," answered Mom.
"Can I go too?" Kaitlynn asked.
"After you eat," said Mom.
"OK," says Kaitlynn.
AN HOUR LATER
"Can we have some lunch now Mom?" asked Collin.
"Yes, we are leaving in about ten minutes, so eat fast."
"OK," said Collin.
TEN MINUTES LATER
"I am tired after that long swim," Collin said to Steve. Steve barked. They got ready to cross the river.
"Here we go kids!" said Dad.
Kaitlynn was leaning out of the wagon looking at the river and they are almost across when they hit a rock. Kaitlynn falls out and is carried downstream by the swift current.
"No!" cried Mom, as she was about to jump out of the wagon. Dad grabbed her and stopped her and said, "she is gone." Mom starts crying.
TEN DAYS LATER
"We have been traveling for ten more days now, " said Dad. "I think we must stop and rest for a few days."
"OK," said Collin. "How much longer until we get there?"
"About eight more weeks if all goes as planned," said Dad.
TWO WEEKS LATER
Dad said, "We are deep into Indian country, so keep a good look out."
TWO HOURS LATER
"I think I see an Indian!" yelled Collin. "Over there!"
"Look behind those bushes," he told Dad.
"Stay very quiet and hand me my gun, " Dad whispered.
Dad took careful aim and POW!!!!!!!!!!!! The bullet whizzes towards the Indian and hits him right between they eyes.
"Wow, great shot Dad, " said Collin.
SIX WEEKS LATER
"We are almost there son," said Dad.
"Yeah," said Collin.
"Finally," said Mom.
The wagon starts to wobble. "OH, NO!" yelled Dad as the wheel popped off. "Great, now we have to walk the last few miles."
"How long will it take? asked Mom.
"Maybe four hours," said Dad.
Collin asked, "Can't we just settle here?"
"That is a good idea," said Dad. "Let's start unpacking."
"We made it Steve, " said Collin.
"WOOF, WOOF," barked Steve.
( a note from mom: I am not sure that I agree with him writing about killing off his sister, but I told him he could publish his story if he followed the directions.)

Favorite Olympic Sports

I have three Olympic sports that I really like to watch. They are swimming, speed skating and skiing.

My first sport I like is swimming. Swimming is a fast and exciting sport. You have to learn 3 - 5 different strokes to be really good. My favorite swimmer is Michael Phelps. He is a seven time gold medalist. My next sport is speed skating. It is fast racing on an ice oval. It is exciting and dangerous and fun to watch. My third sport is skiing. I like all the skiing, from downhill racing, to jumping to the freestyle tricks.

There are a lot of Olympic sports, but these are my three favorites. The 2008 summer Olympic games start in six months and 2 days in China. I can't wait to watch all the athletes compete, though I am going to have to wait two more years for the skiing and the skating.

5 paragraph expository essay

TOPIC: The Three Best Places I Have Ever Been

I have three favorite places that I have been to that I like. These are Yellowstone National Park, the SawTooth Mountains and Mount Rushmore.

My first favorite place is Yellowstone. It is a fun place to go. There are a lot of animals, especially bison, it has a lot of camping spots and hiking information. Daddy and I went to Old Faithful, the mud flats and other places and camped for two days.

My second favorite is the Saw Tooth Mountains. Daddy and I hiked for 3 days and went over 18 miles and it was amazing! We saw a lot of pretty things. I have a big picture on my wall of me and my Daddy high up on a mountain with the Twin Lakes below us.

My third favorite place is Mount Rushmore. This is a big rock carving of our first four presidents; George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. There is a lot of information about the Presidents, when it was built and about the man who designed it. I liked going there with my Daddy. He is always fun to go places with.

These are my favorite places. I would recommend all these for vacation spots.

It is the most venomous snake in the world. Number two, I want to work there when i grow up. Ever since I was about four I wanted to work there. And my third reason is my hero lived there. My hero is Steve Irwin. He loved all animals. All I know about animals I learned from here. I hope I go there some day.

3 point expository paragraph

Topic: My favorite animal

This paragraph is filled with facts about my three favorite animals. I like all animals, but here are the three favorites; the Saltwater Croc, the Fierce Snake, and the Spitting Cobra. The countdown has started with number three, the Spitting Cobra. Did you know the Spiting Cobra can bring down an elephant? A spitting cobra can shoot its venom 30 feet away! How about that? The count down continues with number two ,the Saltwater Crocodile. Scientists believe the Saltwater crocodile was alive when the dinosaurs were. It has stronger jaw pressure then the T-Rex. Now it is time for the absolute favorite, the Fierce Snake. Guess what, this snake is the most venomous snake in the world, but it doesn't have the most causalities, the brown snake does. These are my top three favorite animals.

3 point expository paragraph

Topic: My favorite airplanes

I know the top ten fighters in the world, but my top three are different. These are the Stealth Bomber, F-22 Raptor, and the F-15. My third favorite fighter is the Stealth Bomber. Now you might be asking your self why is a bomber in my top three fighters? Well, the Stealth bomber is actually a fighter and bomber. The reason they did this was they wanted to keep it a secret. The Stealth Bomber can not be picked up by radar! Now it is time for number two, the F-22 Raptor. It just came so I don't know much about it, but I do know it is one GREAT plane. My favorite fighter is the F-15. It is designed to do one mission and one mission alone, destroy enemy planes. Other pilots will NOT go into the sky when it is up there because they know they will get shot down by this aircraft. These aircraft are amazing, so if you ever become a enemy pilot DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT mess with these air crafts.

3 point expository paragraph

TOPIC: My Best Friend

My best friend is Thomas (also known as T). He is my best friend in the whole world. I have a lot of reasons why, but here are just three. We both like Auburn football, we like a lot of the same stuff and we have known each other since we were one. The first reason is we both like Auburn football. This is weird; he grows up with a family that likes Alabama football, Auburn's arch rival, but he likes Auburn. How about that? Now it is time for number two, we like a lot of the same stuff. Things like Nerf guns, football and a lot of other things. Last but not least, number three, we have known each other since we were one. When we met we had a lot of fun and we still have fun today when ever we see each other. This is my best and oldest friend in the world.

3 point persuasive paragraph (especially for my auntie Jax)

Topic: Why parents need to take their kids skiing

I have three reasons why parents should take their kids skiing. These reasons are, skiing is fun, learning balance, and it is a good family trip.

My first reason is skiing is fun. My mom and dad have allowed me to learn how to ski. Ever since I started it has been a lot of fun for me. Something fun about skiing is races. My second reason kids should learn to ski is they get to learn a lot about balance. Skiing is a lot about balance. If you don't have good balance, you will have a hard time learning to ski . Skiing will be a good way to learn how to balance. My third reason is it is a good family outing. Family outings are good for your family because you get to learn a lot more about them.

In conclusion, I think all families should go skiing. Skiing is very fun and important.

(This was written for my Auntie Jax because I want her and Uncle B and Blake to come to Idaho and ski with us.)

3 point expository paragraph

Topic: My top 3 favorite historic battles

I have several battles that I like a lot. These are Stalingrad, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Fall of Berlin . My third favorite battle is the Fall of Berlin. This battle is Russia versus Germany. I think this was Russia's greatest battle. At the same time of the Fall of Berlin, the Battle of the Bulge was going on. This was part of the reason Russia won. These battles were the first of a long failing streak for Germany. Another reason Russia won was because Hitler killed himself. Next, is the Battle of the Bulge between USA and Germany. USA started to push Germany back, when they fell, they really started to put up a fight. They surrounded USA troops in a city but it did not last long. USA called in some bombers to take them out and it worked. Last, but not least, Stalingrad. This battle has to be the most famous battle in World War ll. Germany started very strong, and no wonder, they had the best tank in the world (the Tiger Tank.) They really started to push Russia back. Hitler was packing his bags to go to Stalingrad but his plane was cancelled because Russia was able to some how come back and demolish Germany. These battles greatly affected our world's history.

My first 3 point persuasive essay

Topic: Why kids should play sports

I think a lot of kids should play sports. I have a couple of reasons why.

The first reason, is it is fun! I have played a lot of sports and all of them are fun. For instance, basketball is probably the most fun I have had playing sports so far. It is also a lot of exercise, which leads to my second point. Sports are GREAT exercise. Exercise is good for your health and what makes exercise so fun is having fun doing it. Exercise is very important and it helps your body. All of the sports I have played have involved a lot of exercise. My third point is you get to meet a lot of new people. The more sports you play, the more people you get to meet. Since I started playing sports, I have made a lot of new friends.

In conclusion, I think all kids should play sports because they are fun, it is great exercise and you get to meet a lot of new people.

Collin writes!

Hello all!
This is a new blog, dreamed up and created by Collin Smith!
He asked me this morning if he could publish some of his writing assignments and I thought it was a GREAT idea! It can only help to redo his work, hear it read aloud and receive feedback.
So, constructive comments would be GREAT!
Mommy will do her dead-level best to type it as it is read. :)
(Writing is his least liked subject, so anything that gets him excited about it is fine by me).
